With a roof full of solar panels, this family is all set for low energy bills

A dreamhouse on solar power

A dreamhouse on solar power

Daan moved with his family into a newly built house in Heerlen, the Netherlands, and immediately installed solar panels on the roof to generate as much of their own energy as possible. For the past three years, he has been driving his electric car very affordably and has had to purchase less electricity from the grid. When the sun is shining brightly, he stores excess power in two SMA Home Storage batteries for use later.

The family lives in a detached, modern house in a residential area. The large roof accommodates an impressive solar power installation that generates enough electricity to supply household appliances, heating, and the electric car to a significant extent. What is not immediately needed is stored for later use.

This is what the SMA Home Energy Solution looks like:

The PV installation counts 68 solar panels in an east-west orientation, producing approximately 22,000 kWh. 4.000 kWh is consumed directly from the solar modules on a yearly basis.

* An older type of PV inverter was added to the installation by the family.

The objective

Consume as much of their own power as possible to avoid feed-in costs and become more independent from the grid.

The solution

Modular SMA Home Storage Solution that combines solar power generation and storage and manages it smartly. Driving on solar power makes the whole setup extra cost-effective. The customer monitors and sets priorities through the user-friendly SMA Energy app.

The result

With only 7.400kWh purchased from the grid on a yearly basis, a low energy bill, limited feed-in costs, and fully ready for the future.

“Shortly after we moved in here, we decided to install solar panels on the roof. Thanks to the good advice from our installer, Suntec BV, we now enjoy a sustainable home with our SMA installation every day.”

Daan

With his SMA Home Energy Solution, Daan drives his electric car cheaply and saves on feed-in costs.

The installer advised Daan to utilize the entire roof surface and he is very pleased that he followed that advice. With 68 solar panels in an east-west arrangement and a Sunny Tripower Smart Energy hybrid inverter, his installation generates enough energy to maximize charging his electric car with solar power and also cover a large part of the household consumption for the young family. Two SMA Home Storage batteries ensure that excess solar power is stored for later use, so the family incurs significantly lower feed-in costs charged by the energy supplier. All energy flows are smartly managed by the Sunny Home Manager 2.0. Daan monitors everything with the SMA Energy app and also sets when the electric car needs to be charged for the next trip.

“With the Sunny Home Manager, I can easily charge my electric car with power from the solar panels. I can ensure that the electric car is only charged with solar power, or I can set it up so that my car is 80 percent charged by tomorrow morning. The SMA system then ensures that the car is charged with as much solar power as possible.”

Advantages of the SMA Home Energy Solution

Daan and his family are very satisfied with their PV installation. The combination of 68 solar panels with the Sunny Tripower Smart Energy makes the most out of every hour of sunshine because the hybrid inverter quickly charges the home batteries. This is very important in a northern country like the Netherlands!

Four reasons why this family prefers the modular SMA Home Energy Solution

  • In the tiny technical storage room, the compact 2-in-1 inverter and home batteries take up little space. The two SMA Home Storage batteries are mounted on the wall above each other and seamlessly fit in.

  • The backup function of the Sunny Tripower Smart Energy provides power to the most important consumers when the grid goes down.

  • On the SMA Energy app, Daan can see at a glance how much power the installation produces, what the household consumption is, and how much power is available in the home batteries.

  • With the EV Charger and the Sunny Home Manager 2.0, Daan can choose to charge the car only with solar power or with a combination of solar power and grid power when speed is required. He sets this up in the SMA Energy app.

“I monitor my PV system through the SMA Energy app. It allows me to clearly see how much solar power is being generated by my PV system. I can also see which consumers in the house need power and how much power my SMA EV Charger requires. I can also follow the charging of the home batteries on this app.”
