Universal power measurement for intelligent energy measurement
SMA Energy Meter
Universal power measurement for intelligent energy measurement
A high-performance measurement solution for intelligent energy management in PV systems with SMA devices. The SMA Energy Meter calculates phase-exact and balanced electrical measured values and communicates these via Ethernet in the local network. In this way, all data on grid feed-in and purchased electricity as well as PV generation by other PV inverters can be communicated to SMA systems frequently and with a high level of precision.
Integrating the SMA Energy Meter establishes, in all systems, an ideally coordinated system configuration that guarantees the highest performance and stability with the best cost savings and increased self-consumption.
Also available for applications >63 A
thanks to external current transformers
More benefits
Easy to Use
Quick plug and play installation
Local WebUI
Graphic visualization of current measured values in connection with the Sunny Boy inverter in Sunny Portal
Flexible
Space-saving, top-hat rail mounting in household distribution thanks to compact enclosure
Flexible use in applications > 63 A thanks to external current transformers
Suitable for universal use regardless of existing energy meter
High Performance

SMA Energy Meter
Release Notes
Version 2.02.5.R (July 2023)
Performance features
- Optimized meter reports and readings
- Optimized transmission of energy meter readings
Version 2.01.03.R (April 2022)
Performance features
Improved transmission of energy meter readings to grids with poor or impaired communication links (e.g., Wi-Fi or power-line communication).
Version 2.0.15.R (April 2017)
Performance features:
Version transition from SMA Energy Meter 10 (EMETER-10) to SMA Energy Meter 20 (EMETER-20).
The SMA Energy Meter 20 is fully compatible with the previous version and can be used in all existing application without limitation.
Version 1.02.04.R (February 2014)
Performance features:
More Flexibility – As of firmware 1.02.04.R, employment of the SMA Energy Meter will be also possible in applications >63A. Therefore the connection of external current transformers will be supported.
Recommendation for the current transformer: SMA Solar Technology AG recommends current transformers designed for a secondary current of 5 A. The current transformers should have at least accuracy class 1.
Update SMA Energy Meter:
- For information on the updating procedure, refer to the installation manual.

FAQ
Accessory - current transformer
Which current transformer should I use?
When using a current transformer, it is less important to choose the right manufacturer and more important to use current transformers for a 5 A secondary current with an accuracy class of at least 1.
Which type of current transformer should I use - 100/5 A class 1 or 150/5 A class 1?
The first number in the type of current transformer depends on your PV system's grid connection. For example, if your grid connection is 90 A, you should use a 100/5 A class 1 current transformer. If your grid connection is 120 A, use a 150/5 A class 1 current transformer.
Which installation variant of current transformer should I use?
There are also different installation variants (split-core current transformers, DIN rails). Whether you want to use a split-core current transformer or a DIN rail mounting that the cable is later led through depends mainly on the options available to you on site.
Should I use a current transformer with or without a connection cable?
This depends on the situation on-site. Many installers prefer to use current transformers without connection cables because the lengths often do not suit the installation in situ. This allows the installation to be ideally matched to the conditions.

Compatibility
SMA Energy Meter System Compatibility
Using the SMA Energy Meter with PV plants for self consumption will enable display of grid supply and feed-in. Depending on the selected graphical user interface (local WebUI or Sunny Portal/Sunny Places) also local consumption and generated PV power is displayed.
SMA Storage Systems always require an SMA Energy Meter for measurement of the grid connection point. This enables the optimal control for charge and discharge of the storage battery.
For selected energy management functionalities, the use of an SMA Energy Meter for measurement of the grid connection point is mandatory (e.g. Zero Export, prognosis based battery charging, ...)
The following devices can be used with an SMA Energy Meter:
